Teaching Philosophy
It is my philosophy as an educator to help students gain the abilities and tools they need to learn and grow. The best way to facilitate learning and growth is through the act of creating. I believe an innovative instructional practice that will engage every student in meaningful, authentic, and rigorous work while motivating students to be self-directed and inquisitive learners is through project based learning. Student engagement revolves around attention, curiosity, interest, optimism, and passion that students show when they are grasping the knowledge they are being taught. As an Art Educator, I have learned that Project based learning not only engages students and improves learning, it provides opportunity for utilization of technology, 2D/3D mediums, and connects students and schools with communities, cultures, and the real world. I encourage this instructional practice as it supports one of Winner and Hetland’s Studio Habits of Mind - Understanding the Art world. Project based learning is also rewarding in the fact that each student has individuality and is prompted to express themselves which promotes creative thinking, and expansion with themselves as an artist and an individual. I believe this innovative instructional practice can be accommodating to inclusive learners with IEPs/504’s, as well as gifted/inquisitive learners.
